The Therapy Glossary
CBT? Psychodynamic? Integrative? If you're looking for a therapist, the jargon can be overwhelming. Here's a plain-English guide to what these terms actually mean.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy)
Highly practical. It focuses on the present and helps you identify and change negative thought loops and behaviours. Great for specific anxiety and phobias.
Humanistic / Person-Centred
Focuses on empathy and non-judgment. The therapist doesn't act as an "expert" giving advice, but rather provides a supportive space for you to find your own answers.
Psychodynamic
Looks at your past. It explores how your childhood and unconscious mind shape your current patterns and relationships.
DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy)
Combines CBT with mindfulness and acceptance strategies, teaching skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and effective communication.
Integrative Therapy
This is what I practice at Hadisfar Health. It means the therapist is trained in multiple styles and blends them to suit your unique needs, rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
